H. Wes Pratt

H. Wes Pratt, J.D., a lifelong public servant, started making a difference as a student community activist at Central High School and at Drury University. After graduating from the University of San Diego Law School, Pratt worked in state, local and county government then became a San Diego City Councilmember.
Pratt has worked in non-profit corporate administration, youth program development and higher education. Pratt champions empowerment through valuing the inclusion of diversity. He served as an attorney in private practice, as the first African American state director of the California Conservation Corps, and as deputy director of the Maryland Job Corps.
Pratt returned to his hometown in 2007, was hired by Missouri State University (MSU) as a Coordinator for Diversity Outreach and Recruitment collaborating with various university stakeholders in the outreach, recruitment, retention of diverse students, faculty, and staff. He was a member of the university’s “Diversity Dream Team” that assisted in the development and implementation of various diversity initiatives that incorporated cultural consciousness/competency through inclusive excellence in the university’s public affairs mission.
In 2011 Pratt was appointed Director of Institutional Equity and Compliance/Equal Opportunity Officer, the Title IX Coordinator, and worked to ensure accessibility and reasonable accommodations for disabled employees and students as the ADA Compliance Coordinator. In 2016, MSU President Clif Smart appointed Pratt the Assistant to the President/Chief Diversity Officer (CDO). Pratt was responsible for executive level implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives on campus and in the general community; the Annual Collaborative Diversity Conference; and establishing Inclusive Excellence as the core value in the 2016-2021, and the current 2021-2026, university Long Range Plans.
Pratt is a co-founder and President of the Multicultural Business Association (MB)[formerly dba Minorities in Business (MIB)]; is a member of the NAACP-Springfield Chapter; Co-founder of the Gathering, a community-organizing group that revitalized the local NAACP; a Bridge Springfield:”Brother2Brother” advisor and Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB) Ambassador; and retired from Missouri State University in 2022 after 58 years in public service.
Pratt was recognized in 2017 as the first ever “417- Breakthrough Award” winner for his life-long career in public service and work in promoting diversity and inclusion at Missouri State University and in the Springfield community. In 2021 Pratt was recognized as a Biz 417 Most Influential Business Leader. Pratt is a father, grandfather, and mentor who lives the motto that “Public Service is the Noblest Good!”
Judith is the co-owner and partner of the International Consulting Firm Pratt-Martínez where she enjoys applying multiple disciplines and skills to assist clients seeking justice, education, and awareness. Dr. B. Judith Martínez-García is from Monterrey, Mexico. She has a background in Secondary Education from the Normal School of Monterrey and a Law Degree from Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. Dr. Martínez earned a Masters in the Arts of Teaching from Missouri State University with an emphasis in French and Spanish.
Judith holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies from the University of Arkansas, with emphasis in the Hispanic Studies Interdisciplinary track. She is also a Certified Diversity Professional, (CDP) by DELA and a Certified Moral Courage Mentor, and a Certified CIMER Mentor. She recently completed her Certificate in Public Service and Leadership from the Kennedy School at Harvard University.
Dr. Martínez has been at Missouri State University since the fall of 2002. Part of her charge included the development of the Hispanic Initiative Program (HIP) for the College of Education. She has provided field experiences in diverse settings for pre-service teachers and coordinated programs with area public schools, parents, and various communities to identify and recruit students from diverse backgrounds for Missouri State University. Judith also co-founded the STEP (Student Transition Education Program), and the Latino Leadership Institute (LLI) at Missouri State University to mentor and develop Latino Students on Campus and beyond.
Dr. Martínez has taught in k-12 settings in Mexico at the American School Foundation of Monterrey and the College Level at the Normal School of Monterrey. She taught at Sparta R-III District and Central High School in Springfield, Mo. She teaches Language, Culture, and Literature courses as a tenured Professor in the Department of Languages, Cultures, and Religions in the College of Arts and Letters. She has been recognized with the Board of Governors Award, the Excellence in Teaching Lawrence Teaching Award, and the Missouri State University Research Award. Her research interest focuses on the analysis of representations of violence in contemporary Latin American Literature and Culture such as poverty, narco-narrative, patriarchy, and forced migration.
She is also the Director of the Bear Bridge Mentoring Program for Faculty at MSU and runs other programs for faculty development. She is also a Co-Principal Investigator of the 4-million-dollar CODERS Grant for rural teachers in Missouri. She serves in a wide variety of committees on campus such as the University Senate.
In the community, Judith is a member of the Southeast Rotarian Club, the Junior League of Springfield, and she serves on the Leadership Springfield Board. She is also part of the Minorities for Business Association in Missouri. She is currently participating in the Missouri Leadership Challenge 2024 for females and serves in the A Girl Like Me Network. Judith is often invited to be a speaker for several topics, and she enjoys lending her time to advocate for others.
She has a wonderful and supportive husband, Chuy García, who is a Chef and they have been together for 21 years. They have two brilliant children, one in Grinnell College, Iowa, and the other one is a Sophomore at Central High School. In her free time, Judith practices hot yoga, reads, reads, and reads, and works out every morning at the Y.
